Trailer

Plot summary

Boys are raised inside a guarded facility, tattooed with bar codes and drilled in weapons, demolitions and unarmed combat until they become professional hitmen. One of them, known as Agent 47, works for a clandestine group called the Organization and takes his assignments from his handler, Diana Burnwood. He finishes a job on the warlord Bwana Ovie, and Diana then tells him his next mark, Russian president Mikhail Belicoff, is to be killed in public rather than in private. 47 shoots Belicoff and prepares to leave the country. His superiors tell him the hit failed and that Belicoff survived, then order him to find and kill a woman who may have seen the assassination. Interpol agent Mike Whittier and FSB officer Yuri Marklov are pursuing him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hitman (2007)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Reports before the film's release confirmed that not only were reshoots taking place, but that Fox had fired Gens and denied him final cut; Nicolas de Toth was brought in at that stage to soften the edit and cut down material.
  • To save money the filmmakers changed 47's origins by adding footage from the Fox-owned TV series Dark Angel; Gens said the film does not deal directly with the clone storyline, though the original train station sequence with another bald, barcoded assassin was very explicit.
  • After Eidos and IO Interactive entered negotiations with Hollywood in February 2003, 20th Century Fox acquired the rights and hired screenwriter Skip Woods, with actor Vin Diesel executive producing and starring in the film.
  • Diesel stepped down from the role in December 2006, and in January 2007 Olyphant was cast as the lead with director Xavier Gens at the helm.
  • Olyphant stated on the Nerdist podcast that he had no interest in returning for a sequel and only did the original film in order to pay for his new house, following the sudden cancellation of Deadwood.
  • It was reported in February 2013 that the film would be rebooted as Hitman: Agent 47, with Paul Walker starring as Agent 47 before his death on November 30, 2013, and commercials director Aleksander Bach making his feature film debut.
  • Slovenian philosopher and film theorist Slavoj Žižek included Hitman in his personal list of 10 greatest films in a 2012 poll by Sight & Sound magazine, saying the list contained only guilty pleasures and made "no compromises for high quality or good taste".
