Victor Spinetti
Biography
The Welsh actor, author and poet Victor Spinetti worked for about fifty years in film and theater. Born in Cwm, he trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and became closely associated with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, appearing in Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be and Oh, What a Lovely War!, the latter transferring to Broadway and winning him a Tony Award. He gained international fame in the 1960s through the Beatles films A Hard Day's Night (1964), Help! (1965) and Magical Mystery Tour (1967). His many other films included The Taming of the Shrew (1967), Under Milk Wood (1972), The Little Prince (1974), The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1979), Under the Cherry Moon (1986) and The Krays (1990). He later acted with the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed musicals, wrote and toured a one-man show, and voiced animated characters. He died in 2012.

Spinetti's work with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop included Oh, What a Lovely War! in 1963. The production moved to New York City, where he earned a Tony Award for playing an obnoxious Drill Sergeant.

Spinetti co-authored and directed the National Theatre play In His Own Write, adapted from a book by John Lennon, which premiered at the Old Vic on 18 June 1968.

Spinetti began his stage career at Dhurjati Chaudhury's Irving Theatre Club, which was located on Irving Street, just off Leicester Square in London.
