Plot summary

Alan Hakman is the most skilled cutter at EYE Tech, the company that makes the Zoe microchip. Implanted in a person's nervous system, the chip records a life, and after death a family may have the best moments of those memories retrieved and watched on video; the process is called Rememory. The cutter's code forbids carrying an implant, mixing footage and selling memories. Groups opposed to Rememory have formed, and the former cutter Fletcher leads them. Alan's latest assignment is the final cut of the memories of Charles Bannister, a wealthy businessman and lawyer at EYE Tech. Fletcher demands those recordings and offers him five hundred thousand dollars. Alan refuses, and, worried for his safety, uses what he knows from memory tapes to get a pistol from a criminal.
