Plot summary
In 2034, programmer Ken Castle's self-replicating nanites replace brain tissue and let one person steer another's body and look out through their eyes. The technology first powers Society, a life-simulation game whose paying players direct live actors as avatars, and makes Castle the richest man alive. He follows it with Slayers, a shooter in which death-row prisoners fight with real weapons in designated areas; anyone who survives thirty matches earns freedom. John "Kable" Tillman, the crowd's favorite, has come through twenty-seven, guided by seventeen-year-old gamer Simon Silverton. Kable's estranged wife, Angie, earns her living as a Society character, yet is denied custody of Delia, their daughter. Castle, threatened by his champion's winning streak, puts a new inmate, Hackman, into Slayers to end it.
