Mark Borchardt

Biography

Mark Borchardt is an American independent filmmaker from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, who began making movies at fourteen with a Super-8 camera. After military service he continued film work at a local university, wrote and produced Halloween radio dramas, and earned a Milwaukee Art Futures Board fellowship. While he sought funding for his unfinished feature Northwestern, Chris Smith and Sarah Price filmed him; when that project collapsed, he finished his horror short Coven, and their footage became American Movie (1999), which Sony Classics picked up and which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. He has since appeared on television and in films, including The One (2001) and The Amateur Monster Movie (2011), appeared five times on Late Show with David Letterman, and directed the documentary The Dundee Project in 2018.
