Plot summary
In 2017, most people stay indoors and send remote-controlled androids, called surrogates, to live in their place. FBI agent Tom Greer and his partner Jennifer Peters investigate a killing at a Fort Point club, where two operators died along with their machines. One of the dead is Jared Canter, whose father, Dr. Lionel Canter, invented the surrogates and once headed the company that built them. A new weapon overloaded the machines and killed the people wired into them. Since their son died, Tom and his wife Maggie have lived apart, and she meets him only through her surrogate. In zones where surrogates are banned, a movement led by a man called the Prophet rejects them. When Tom's own surrogate is destroyed, he has to go out in his real body for the first time in years.

- In March 2007 Disney acquired feature film rights to the 2005-2006 comic book series The Surrogates, a project conceived by Max Handelman and Elizabeth Banks through Brownstone Productions, who enlisted producer Todd Lieberman to move it forward.
- Composer Richard Marvin recorded the film's score with the 120-piece Hollywood Studio Symphony, marking the fifth time he and director Jonathan Mostow had worked together on a movie score.
