Plot summary
Blithe Hollow, Massachusetts, is the town where Norman Babcock, eleven, grows up able to see and hear the dead, his late grandmother included. Almost no one living accepts him, and schoolmates pick on him for it. Neil Downe, a boy who gets bullied too, becomes his friend. Rehearsing a school play about the witch the town executed three centuries ago, Norman is gripped by visions of the old witch hunt. His estranged great-uncle Prenderghast tells him that reading from a certain book before sundown is the ritual that keeps a witch's curse off the town. Prenderghast's ghost appears with the same demand, and Norman sets out to find the book.

SPOILER
The film drew attention for revealing in its final scenes that supporting character Mitch is gay, which made him the first openly gay character in a mainstream animated film.- In 2013 ParaNorman became the first-ever PG-rated movie nominated at the GLAAD Media Awards, where it lost to The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
- ParaNorman is the first-ever stop-motion film to use full-color 3-D printers for replacement animation, after Laika's Coraline popularized black-and-white printers that sped up puppet production and made the many puppet faces it needed.
- Laika's in-house VFX department made the film's storms out of cotton and put them into the computer, while crowd shots needed over 100 or 200 background characters, some still animated in stop motion by hand.
- Instead of traditional 3-D format cameras, Laika had sixty Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR cameras shoot the movie.
