Tomas Milian
Biography
Tomas Milian made his mark as an actor and musician in both American and Italian cinema. Born in Havana, he studied method acting at the Actors Studio in New York and launched his career in the United States before settling in Italy. He rose to prominence in Spaghetti Westerns, frequently cast as Mexican bandits or revolutionaries, with roles in The Big Gundown (1967), Compañeros (1970), and Four of the Apocalypse (1975). As that genre declined, he moved into Italian poliziotteschi films, earning acclaim for his portrayal of a disturbed killer in Almost Human (1974) and appearing in the giallo Don't Torture a Duckling (1972). He later turned to crime comedies, where his command of Roman slang made him a cult figure, and won a Nastro d'Argento for his supporting role in La Luna. After returning to the United States, he took supporting roles in Havana (1990), Amistad (1997), Traffic (2000), and The Lost City (2005).

Milian went to Italy in 1958 for a theater festival in Spoleto, where director Mauro Bolognini discovered him and gave him supporting roles in drama films.
Languages
Milian wrote his own lines in Roman slang for his crime comedies, and his inventive use of romanesco made him a cult performer in Italy.

In 1966, Milian started the Tomas Milian Group, whose members included Ray Lovelock on vocals and Peppe Colella on bass. He also wrote and sang the theme songs for some of his own films.
