Plot summary
On the Mendocino County coast in 1951, Doris and George meet over dinner at an inn. Doris is twenty-four, a housewife from Oakland. George is twenty-seven, an accountant from New Jersey. Both are happily married to other people, and between them they have six children. They spend the night together. Despite their marriages, they agree to meet each year at the same hotel for a weekend together.

- Paul McCartney wrote and recorded a title song for the film with Wings, but it went unused and only surfaced years later as a single B-side.
- The real inn used for exterior shots became such a popular romantic getaway afterward that its owners split the film's cottage into two rentable halves named after the movie.
- The seaside cottage seen on screen was only a shell built on a temporary foundation, with all interior scenes actually filmed on a Los Angeles soundstage.
