Plot summary
In 2002, young Quinn Abercromby visits a London Underground construction site where workers break into a cave and wake a dragon, which burns them with its breath. Quinn survives; his mother Karen, the project engineer, dies shielding him. The dragon escapes above ground and more follow, and the world's militaries fail to stop them. Eighteen years later, Quinn and his friend Creedy lead a community of survivors at Bamburgh Castle, where food is short. When Eddie and others take a truck to the fields, a dragon attacks; Quinn, Creedy and Jared drive it off, but the crops burn. Then Denton Van Zan arrives with heavily armed Americans, and tells Quinn the dragons cannot see well at twilight.

- Alexander Siddig claimed in a 2015 A.V. Club interview that Matthew McConaughey insisted upon being referred to by his character's name on and off set, throughout production.
- Reign of Fire was filmed in Ireland's Wicklow Mountains, at the Glendasan Valley Lead Mines, with permission given on condition that the area not be damaged, so the crew removed all sets once filming was complete; an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Europe then stopped many planned scenes through quarantine restrictions.
- The mechanism of the dragon's fire breath was inspired by the biology of real-life creatures, such as the anti-predator adaptation of the bombardier beetle and the poison glands of vipers, and was used in later works such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Gods of Egypt and Game of Thrones.
- To overcome the limitation, the then-groundbreaking work done by digital effects animator Neil Eskuri on Disney's 2000 release Dinosaur was utilized as a benchmark in order to create a realistic physical simulation of the dragon.
- Christian Bale said he told Scott Moutter, who plays his stepson in the movie, that he was well positioned to take the sequel from him because of the way the movie ends; the film underperformed, and twenty years later Bale joked that a sequel would be made "for Dexerto's eyes only."
