Plot summary

Earth is running out of resources, and the Resources Development Administration mines unobtanium on Pandora, a lush moon inhabited by the Na'vi. Human scientists link with Na'vi-human hybrid bodies called avatars. Jake Sully, a paraplegic former Marine, joins the Avatar Program in place of his dead identical twin. Dr. Grace Augustine considers him unfit for the work, and Parker Selfridge assigns him as her security escort. Colonel Miles Quaritch offers Jake the surgery that will restore his legs if Jake reports what he learns among the Na'vi. Linked to his avatar, Jake walks again, and on an expedition he is rescued by Neytiri, a Na'vi warrior, who leads him back to her clan, the Omaticaya.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Avatar (2009)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The idea for Avatar's blue-skinned race came from a dream Cameron's mother described to him, featuring a blue-skinned woman 12 feet tall; he first used the image in a screenplay written in 1976 or 1977 that was never produced.
  • Fox decisively declined to produce Avatar in mid-2006, so Cameron showed his Avatar clip to Disney CEO Bob Iger; when Disney attempted to take over the project, Fox exercised its right of first refusal and committed to making the film in October 2006.
  • Chris Evans, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum were all considered for Jake Sully, and Fox pushed for Jake Gyllenhaal, but the part went to the then-unknown Sam Worthington, whose angry outburst after several secretive auditions caught Cameron's attention.
  • Artist Roger Dean, whose work features dragons and floating rock formations, sued Cameron and Fox in 2013, claiming Pandora was inspired by 14 of his images and seeking $50 million in damages; his case was dismissed the following year.
  • James Cameron wrote an 80-page treatment for Avatar in 1994 and intended to film it straight after Titanic for a 1999 release, but according to Cameron the technology needed to achieve his vision of the film was not yet available.
  • Weta Digital in Wellington at one point employed 900 people on the film, Microsoft built a custom cloud system called Gaia to synchronize data for remote crew, and Weta rendered the film on a 10,000 sq ft farm of 4,000 Hewlett-Packard servers.
  • Avatar passed Cameron's own Titanic on January 25, 2010 to become the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, and on February 2 it did the same in the United States and Canada.
