Leon Errol

Biography

Leon Errol was an Australian-American comedian who built a long career in vaudeville, on Broadway and in Hollywood films. Born in Sydney, he studied medicine before turning to entertaining, toured Australia, New Zealand and Britain, and by 1905 was running a vaudeville troupe in Portland, Oregon. He reached Broadway in the Ziegfeld Follies in 1911 and appeared there through 1915, later headlining at the Palace. He made his first film in 1916 and moved to Hollywood, becoming known for comedy roles and a wobbly, unsteady walk that suited his drunk routines. From 1934 he starred in shorts for RKO, six a year until his death in 1951, and he played Uncle Matt and Lord Epping in the Mexican Spitfire series. Later credits included the thriller The Invisible Man's Revenge (1944). A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was dedicated to him in 1960.
