Plot summary
In the California High Sierras, a hunter named Wheeler tells the regulars at Webb's Cafe that he has seen a tiger with tusks, and they laugh at him. Game warden George Oakes stops laughing when the animal lands on his car that night, and he brings Dr. Ross Harkness, a university zoologist, to town to look into it. At the cafe, Harkness meets Nola Mason, the waitress, and Ruth Marshall, who is stranded on her way to her fiancé, Prof. Clifford Groves. Groves lives with his daughter Jan outside town, and he has just been turned away by the Naturalists' Club in the city, which dismisses his claim that Neanderthal man was the intellectual equal of modern man. He returns home, shuts himself in his laboratory and turns Ruth away.
