Plot summary
Buster Moon's rebuilt New Moon Theater is thriving, with Johnny, Rosita, Gunter, Meena and Miss Crawly making up his cast and crew and Ash singing on her own at a rock club. A talent scout from Redshore City, Suki Lane, is unimpressed by his show. With encouragement from Nana Noodleman, Buster takes his crew to the city, and when Crystal Entertainment turns them away, they sneak inside for an audition with the mogul Jimmy Crystal. Buster's own pitch leaves him cold, so Gunter proposes a space-themed science fiction musical built on songs by Clay Calloway, a reclusive rock legend whose wife Ruby died fifteen years earlier. Jimmy, assuming the star will take part, backs the show and puts the group up at his hotel.
