Gretchen Mol
Biography
Gretchen Mol is an American actress from Deep River, Connecticut who became known for her role as Gillian Darmody on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. She attended The American Musical and Dramatic Academy and graduated from the William Esper Studio. Her career started in summer stock theater in Vermont. Her film debut came in Spike Lee's Girl 6 (1996), after which Abel Ferrara cast her in The Funeral (1996) and New Rose Hotel (1998). She appeared in Donnie Brasco (1997), Rounders (1998), The Thirteenth Floor (1999) and Sweet and Lowdown (1999). She took the title part in The Notorious Bettie Page (2005), and later appeared in 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and Manchester by the Sea (2016). On stage she played Jenny in The Shape of Things in London and New York before reprising the role in the 2003 film. She shared two SAG Awards with the Boardwalk Empire cast.

First role
Mol's first film role came in Spike Lee's 1996 movie Girl 6, a tiny part that she said instantly put Spike Lee on her resume and ended her days of auditioning as a day player.
Early training
Mol trained at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy and graduated from the William Esper Studio, and while starting out she worked as an usher at the Angelika Film Center in New York.
Beyond film
In 2004, Mol appeared on Broadway for a year in the musical Chicago, where she sang and danced in the role of Roxie Hart.
Getting ready for a role
Mol worked with director Mary Harron for two years on The Notorious Bettie Page while Harron struggled to finance it, and said she felt she had lived with the project and really worked for the role.
First role
Mol began her television career in a Coca-Cola commercial. In 1996 she took the small part of Maggie Tilton in the miniseries Dead Man's Walk, which was based on a Larry McMurtry novel.
