Plot summary
In the Bronx in 1960, nine-year-old Calogero Anello lives with his parents, Lorenzo and Rosina, in Belmont, an Italian-American neighborhood. From his building's stoop he watches Sonny LoSpecchio, the local Mafia boss, shoot a man in the street. The police question Calogero, and he keeps quiet, which draws Sonny's sympathy. Lorenzo drives a Surface Transit bus. Sonny's men offer him a better paying job; Lorenzo declines and tells his son to stay away from Sonny and the bar where his crew gathers.

- Before partnering with De Niro, Palminteri rejected several offers for the film's rights, including some as high as $1 million, because he was not granted the roles of primary screenwriter and Sonny, the gangster whom Calogero meets.
- The deal that brought Palminteri's story to the screen was sealed with nothing but a gentlemen's agreement, by De Niro's account, after which the two began crafting the screenplay together.
- The story is drawn closely from screenwriter Chazz Palminteri's own childhood, including the real shooting he witnessed as a boy, as depicted through the character Calogero, and details of his own father's job and name.
