   Behind the award

   In 2010, Gallo took the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 67th Venice International Film Festival for a non-speaking part in Essential Killing. He skipped the ceremony, so director Jerzy Skolimowski accepted for him.

2. A role that slipped away

   Gallo was strongly considered for Uncle Rico in the 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite and nearly got the part, but Jon Gries ended up with the role.

   Behind the camera

   Gallo wrote, directed, starred in and composed the soundtrack for his directorial debut Buffalo '66, which he made for $1.5 million and which was nominated for Best First Feature at the Independent Spirit Awards.

4. About the name

   In 1984, Gallo danced under the name "Prince Vince" on Graffiti Rock, a hip-hop dance show whose TV pilot was never sold.

5. Own stunts

   Gallo says he raced motorbikes professionally in Formula II for Yamaha without training, and in his 2004 film The Brown Bunny he did his own racing scenes on a gold Honda NSR250 that he designed himself.

6. A change of course

   As a teenager in the mid-1970s, Gallo sang and played electric bass in garage bands including Blue Mood, Zephyr, The Good, The Detours and the Plastics. He moved to New York City at 16 and later joined Gray, whose members included Jean-Michel Basquiat.
