Plot summary
Holly Hamilton is tired of moving each time her single mother Jean's romances end. In Brooklyn, Holly decides to invent a secret admirer so Jean will be happy and want to stay. Overhearing Ben, her friend Amy's uncle and the owner of the River Bistro, ordering flowers, she asks his advice on women, telling him it is for a school project. She sends Jean orchids, other gifts and love notes, and writes to her online as an admirer she calls Ben. As Jean responds, Holly needs a photograph and sends one of the real Ben, then explains that he cannot visit because he is working in China. Holly is also drawn to Adam, a classmate.
