Roman Polanski
Biography
Roman Polanski, born in Paris in 1933 and raised in Kraków, is a Polish and French filmmaker who has also worked as an actor. After studying at the National Film School in Łódź, he appeared in Andrzej Wajda's A Generation (1955) and made short films that drew attention. His first feature, Knife in the Water (1962), earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and brought him international notice. In Britain he directed Repulsion (1965) and The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967), and in the United States he made Rosemary's Baby (1968) and the acclaimed crime drama Chinatown (1974). Tess (1979) received César Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, and The Pianist (2002) brought him the Academy Award for Best Director while the film won the Palme d'Or. Later work includes The Ghost Writer (2010), which earned him a Silver Bear for Best Director, and Carnage (2011).
