Plot summary
Divine lives under the name Babs Johnson in a trailer on the edge of Phoenix, Maryland, with her mother Edie, her son Crackers and her companion Cotton. A tabloid paper has named her the filthiest person alive. Connie and Raymond Marble, two criminals, are jealous of that reputation and set out to take the title from her. The Marbles take young women and have their manservant Channing impregnate them, then sell the newborns to lesbian couples.

For the film's notorious ending, star Divine said he followed a dog around for three hours, filming its rear end, waiting for it to defecate so the scene could be shot.- Director John Waters said he wrote the script for Pink Flamingos while high, but was not high while actually filming it.
- New Zealand's Classification Office originally rated Pink Flamingos R18 with no cuts, but the film was later refused classification on a re-submission in 2024, effectively banning it there.
- Waters had plans for a sequel titled Flamingos Forever and Troma Entertainment offered to finance the picture, but it was never made, as Divine refused to be involved and Edith Massey died in 1984.
- Shot on a budget of only $12,000, Pink Flamingos is an example of Waters' style of low-budget filmmaking, inspired by New York underground filmmakers like Kenneth Anger, Andy Warhol, and brothers Mike and George Kuchar.
- In 2021 the Library of Congress selected Pink Flamingos for preservation in the National Film Registry as a culturally, historically or aesthetically significant work.
