Plot summary
After a global extraterrestrial invasion, Chicago is placed under martial law. As the Drummond family flees the city, the aliens vaporize the parents and leave their sons Gabriel and Rafe alive. Nearly a decade later, the world submits to the alien Legislators, and humans are conscripted to build underground habitats called Closed Zones. Gabriel lives in the impoverished Pilsen neighborhood, where Special Branch Commander William Mulligan, once partnered with Gabriel's father, presses him for information about the Phoenix resistance. Gabriel arranges to sell a hand-rolled cigarette holding coded secrets passed to him by a coworker; a Phoenix member takes him to Wicker Park, where his brother Rafe, the resistance's leader, takes the cigarette and tells him to leave, because Phoenix is about to attack the Unity Rally at Soldier Field.
