Plot summary
Peter and Katie Morris take their children Corey, Jillian, and Riley camping near Brown Mountain, North Carolina, the ridge known for the Brown Mountain Lights. Riley, who is autistic, records a video journal of the trip on his camcorder. On the first night, lights appear in the sky above the tent. Driving a foggy mountain road the next morning, the family is sent down an isolated route by their GPS; cellphone signals drop and the car runs low on gas. A dead crow falls beside them, and they reach a tunnel blocked by recently abandoned vehicles, belongings scattered around the empty cars. Peter, Corey, and Riley get out of the car to look.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Beckerman was inspired to create Alien Abduction while living in North Carolina, where he heard a local legend about strange lights seen on a nearby mountain ridge and people who claimed to have been abducted while viewing them.
- Riley's habit of filming everything was used as a coping mechanism after a psychologist told Beckerman that he had previously treated an autistic child who videotaped everything that he did.
- Lewis completed the script before filming began, but Beckerman chose to let the actors ad-lib their lines as a way of helping them get into character more easily.
- Beckerman drew inspiration from director Alfred Hitchcock, and included a scene of several dozen birds in the film as a tribute to him.
