Plot summary

Off the coast of Mexico, a fishing captain who deals in shark fins is caught in a hurricane that throws sharks onto his boat. The same storm reaches Los Angeles, flooding the streets and dropping sharks on the city. On the Santa Monica Pier, former champion surfer Fin Shepard runs a bar with his friend Baz, the barmaid Nova and the regular customer George. When the waves smash the bar, Fin wants to reach his estranged wife April and their daughter Claudia, whose home lies close to the beach and in the path of the flood. Nova, who carries a scar she will not explain, and George join him. Armed with what they can carry, the group sets out through water that is no longer empty.

  • Ian Ziering had serious reservations about the Sharknado script but took the role of bar owner Fin, motivated in part by needing to earn enough to qualify for Screen Actors Guild health insurance for his family.
  • Sharknado's cast had to imagine the sharks themselves on set, because a green screen was frequently in use during filming.
  • A third airing of Sharknado on July 27, 2013, drew 2.1 million viewers, setting a record as the most watched original film encore in Syfy's history after its audience grew with each broadcast.
  • In July 2014 former Mystery Science Theater 3000 cast members mocked Sharknado for a RiffTrax Live event broadcast to other theaters, and director Anthony C. Ferrante said being skewered by the MST3K guys was an honor.
  • A National Weather Service representative joked that people should shelter in a sturdy building "whether sharks are raining down or not", and the Red Cross of Oklahoma City used Sharknado to pass on real storm safety information.
