Plot summary

Still mourning her husband, Dr. Belinda Simpson comes to the small Missouri town of Sikeston to take the post of town physician. She discovers that a number of residents, children at Miss Hattie Clarence's orphanage among them, have fallen ill from an unknown ailment. The townspeople doubt her skill because she is a woman, and many of them refuse to let her treat the orphans, whom they hold responsible for the sickness; some would be glad to see the orphanage shut down. Her best friend Annie and Lee Owens, the town blacksmith, offer her reassurance. Belinda sets out to make sense of the ailment, and she wonders whether she is in over her head.
