Big break
Jimmy Herman was chosen by a Los Angeles casting agent in April 1989 for a part in Dances with Wolves, playing the Sioux warrior Stone Calf.
First role
Herman got a small role in John Cat, a CBC Television pilot drawn from a W. P. Kinsella book. That part made him want to act, so he quit his job at Native Counseling Services.
Early training
Herman relocated to Edmonton in 1980, where he attended the Native Communications Program at Grant MacEwan College. The Malcolm Calliou Award went to him there.
A change of course
After he graduated from Grant MacEwan, Herman worked for Native Counseling Services of Alberta in its media department as a media assistant. He also did narration for the agency, ACCESS radio and the National Film Board.
