Miriam Hopkins
Biography
Miriam Hopkins was an American actress who began in the chorus in New York City and acted on the stage throughout the 1920s. She signed with Paramount Pictures in 1930, made her screen debut in Fast and Loose, and won praise as Ivy in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931). Her breakthrough came with Ernst Lubitsch's Trouble in Paradise (1932), followed by pre-Code successes The Smiling Lieutenant (1931), The Story of Temple Drake (1933), and Design for Living (1933). She earned a Best Actress nomination from the Academy for Becky Sharp (1935), the first performer nominated for a color film, and later a Golden Globe nomination for The Heiress (1949). Her later films included The Old Maid (1939), The Mating Season (1951), The Children's Hour (1961), and The Chase (1966). She also acted widely in television drama and received film and television stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Hopkins tried out for Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. Of all the hopefuls, she alone came from Georgia, yet the role was given to British actress Vivien Leigh.
A role that slipped away
Hopkins played the lead in Owen Davis's 1933 Broadway play Jezebel. She was bitterly disappointed when Bette Davis was chosen for that same role in the 1938 film version.
First role
At 20, Hopkins joined a New York City chorus line. During the 1920s she appeared often on stage, among them the 1926 adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy.
Big break
Hopkins had her breakthrough in 1932 with Ernst Lubitsch's Trouble in Paradise, playing a beautiful and jealous pickpocket and showing off her charm and wit.
