Gibb McLaughlin
Biography
Gibb McLaughlin was an English actor who worked on stage and screen, born in Sunderland, County Durham. He spent about a decade as a salesman in Kingston-upon-Hull before joining the Hull Amateur Operatic Society, where he played Koko in The Mikado. Concerts with Anne Croft and music hall turns as a comedian and monologist followed. From 1921 to 1959 he appeared in 118 films, becoming a character actor known for disguise and for slipping into ethnic and Dickensian roles. His best known pictures included Oliver Twist (1948), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and Hobson's Choice (1954). In Mr Reeder in Room 13 (1938), he took one of his few starring parts, as the detective J. G. Reeder; the film came out in America under the title Mystery of Room 13 (1941).
