Plot summary
In India, Case serves with the Bengal Lancers as a lieutenant of mixed race. He has been having an affair with Elsa, the wife of a fellow officer, and she is persuaded to end it. When he comes back from a sortie in which that officer is captured by local bandits, Case faces charges of cowardice, and the show trial ends with a dishonorable discharge and ten years in prison. The tribesmen help him get away, and in the mountains the brigands seize him. Their chief, Eli Khan, offers him shelter and the chance of revenge if he will train the band to attack the British fort.
