Alfonso Bedoya

Biography

Alfonso Bedoya was a Mexican actor who appeared often in American films. Born in Vicam, Sonora, he worked as a character actor in both the Mexican and American film industries during the 1930s and 1940s, making more than 175 Mexican films in that period. He was best remembered as Gold Hat, the bandit leader in John Huston's 1948 adventure film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Bedoya's outburst about badges was ranked number 36 on the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest Movie Quotes, and the same institute placed the film 30th on its list of the greatest American movies. The line was widely referenced and parodied in television, film, music, and literature. His last movie, The Big Country (1958), was released after his death in 1957.
