Plot summary
When the Royal North Surrey Regiment is ordered to the Sudan in 1895, Harry Faversham faces a career he was pushed into by family tradition, and he worries that he will fail in battle. On the eve of departure he resigns his commission. His fellow officers John Durrance, Burroughs, and Willoughby each send him a white feather, and when his fiancée Ethne Burroughs does not speak for him, he asks her for a fourth. She refuses, so he takes one from her fan. Harry tells Dr. Sutton that he acted from cowardice and decides to restore his name. He leaves for Egypt, where Dr. Harraz helps him pass as a mute Sangali man.
