Plot summary
Dave runs the Auk, a restaurant in a small Newfoundland town, and business is poor. His wife Claire has moved to Washington, DC, and the two are apart. His neighbor Phonse steps in with a fabricated story: a rare Tasker's sulphureous duck has been sighted nearby. The claim starts drawing bird watchers, and customers, to the Auk. Phonse also comes across ten kilos of cocaine and wants Dave's help to dispose of it. Phonse has built a prototype Recreational Submarine Vehicle and worries that a company is spying on him to take his plans. Dave also falls for Alice, Phonse's sister-in-law, from Gull Tickle.

- When the print of Rare Birds needed to get from its 2001 Toronto International Film Festival premiere to a second screening at the Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax, the producers had to drive it from Toronto to Halifax because of the flight restrictions in place after the September 11 attacks.
