Plot summary
Don Johnston earned a small fortune from computers and now lives in quiet retirement, happy with old movies and music. Sherry, his girlfriend, ends things and moves out just as a letter in a pink envelope arrives. The unsigned note claims to be from a former lover and says he has a son, nearly nineteen, who may be looking for him. Don plans to do nothing, but his neighbor Winston, a mystery novel enthusiast, works out where the women most likely to have sent it now live. Winston hands him maps and flight reservations and talks him into going. Though reluctant to travel, Don sets out to call on the women without warning.

- Jim Jarmusch had each of the four female leads write her own pink paper letter "in character", to plant in each one's mind the possibility that she was the mother of Don's supposed son. The letter used in the film was a composite of the four.
- Reed Martin sued Jarmusch in March 2006, claiming the director stole the film's concept from a very similar script that had circulated among several people eventually involved in the production. Jarmusch said the claim had "absolutely no merit", and a federal district court judge dismissed the lawsuit on 28 September 2007.
- Bill Murray said in a 2019 interview that he asked Jarmusch to shoot the film in locations within an hour of his house. Jarmusch complied, adding that Murray "gave us limitations that helped us".
