Plot summary
English war widow Edwina Broome arrives in the Irish village of Kilshannon and takes a house in the enclave the locals call Widows' Peak. The property falls under the rental terms of Mrs. Doyle-Counihan, twice widowed, who also keeps a tight hold on her grown son, Godfrey. The rules bar children, most men and married or single ladies, though Miss Katherine O'Hare is the puzzling exception. An outspoken spinster who dislikes the English, Katherine runs a boarding house and is tolerated by the wealthy widows. At a welcome tea party she questions Edwina about her reasons for coming to Ireland; Edwina says she lived in Antibes after her husband's death and had to avoid fortune hunters. Mrs. Doyle-Counihan sets her sights on Edwina for Godfrey, while the town dentist, Colin Clancy, courts Katherine.

- The film was conceived by its co-producer Prudence Farrow with her mother, Maureen O'Sullivan, in mind for the role of Miss O'Hare, but O'Sullivan declined because of her advanced age and dwindling stamina, so the part went to her daughter and Prudence's sister, Mia Farrow.
