Plot summary
Buster Moon, a koala, owns a struggling theater in Calatonia, a city of anthropomorphic animals, and the llama Judith, a bank representative, threatens him with foreclosure. To fill the seats he stages a singing competition, but his elderly iguana assistant, Miss Crawly, mistypes the $1,000 prize as $100,000 on the flyers, which a fan blows out the window and across the city. Animals audition, and Buster picks contestants including the pig Rosita, mother to 25 piglets, the punk-rock porcupine Ash, the teenage gorilla Johnny, the street musician mouse Mike and the dancing pig Gunter. Meena, a teenage elephant, fails her audition because of stage fright. Learning of the $100,000 figure, Buster and his friend Eddie visit Eddie's wealthy grandmother, the former stage star Nana Noodleman, who agrees to attend a preview before deciding whether to fund the prize.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Sing set the record for the highest-grossing film to never finish first at the U.S. and Canadian box office, beating My Big Fat Greek Wedding's $241.4 million from 2002, and held it until Oppenheimer, another Universal film, surpassed it in 2023.
- Because of the concept of a musical film with animals singing various covers, the film contains over 65 non-stop pop songs, the rights to which cost 15% of the film's $75 million budget.
- Jennings had directors Edgar Wright, as a goat, and Wes Anderson, as Daniel, a giraffe who auditions with the song "Ben", provide "additional voices", continuing a tradition of the three friends appearing in each other's films.
- An archival recording of Shooby Taylor, who died in 2003, singing "Stout-Hearted Men" was used for the singing voice of a hippopotamus.
- The voices of Rosita and Norman's piglet children were provided by Oscar, Leo, Caspar and Asa Jennings, the children of Garth Jennings.
