Carl Esmond
Biography
Carl Esmond was an Austrian actor who built a stage and screen career in Europe before moving to the United States. Born in Vienna, he trained in music and drama there, with Ernst Arndt among his teachers, and first worked professionally at the Burgtheater at 22. He acted in Vienna, Berlin, and Hamburg, and entered films with The Emperor's Waltz (1933), becoming known in Viennese romantic comedies, including Max Ophüls' Liebelei. He was a matinee idol for UFA from 1935 to 1936. In London he adopted the name Carl Esmond for Blossom Time and won praise as Prince Albert in Victoria Regina. He went to Hollywood in 1938 for The Dawn Patrol. During World War II he frequently played Nazi villains but also sympathetic parts in Little Men (1940) and in The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944). He later worked in early television plays and returned to Europe for Lola Montès (1955).

Before acting, Esmond worked as a bank clerk, then studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna under Ernst Arndt, changing his name to Willy Eichberger while there.
