Plot summary
Luke, a reckless drifter, hitches a ride with Fern and Daisy, two women who pull a gun on him; he steals their car, and after a flat tire he is back on the road. Ken picks him up and takes him home. When three gay bashers corner him, Luke uses the gun he took from the women and flags down a car driven by Jon, a withdrawn film critic who has just been told he is HIV-positive. Jon lets him stay, and the two discover they share the diagnosis. Luke argues that being infected leaves them free of rules, and Jon, uneasy about Luke's temper, cannot stop thinking about him.

- The Living End takes its title from a song by the Jesus and Mary Chain on their 1985 debut album Psychocandy, and a cover version by Wax Trax! Records artists Braindead Soundmachine plays during the film's credits.
- Released during the AIDS epidemic, the film came out in 1992, which Robert Mills notes was the year AIDS officially became the number one cause of death for US men aged 25 to 44.
