Biography

Raúl Julia was a Puerto Rican actor who worked across stage, film and television in a wide range of roles. Born in San Juan, he became interested in acting at school and moved to New York after Orson Bean encouraged him, finding work with Joseph Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival. He made his Broadway debut in 1968 in The Cuban Thing and received four Tony nominations, for Two Gentlemen of Verona, Where's Charley?, The Threepenny Opera and Nine, along with a Drama Desk Award. His films included The Panic in Needle Park (1971), Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), Romero (1989), Presumed Innocent (1990) and Street Fighter (1994), and he drew Golden Globe nominations for Tempest (1982), Kiss of the Spider Woman and Moon Over Parador (1988). He played Gomez Addams in The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993), and for the television film The Burning Season he received a posthumous Emmy and Golden Globe.
