Roshan Seth
Biography
Roshan Seth is a British-Indian actor who has also worked as a writer and theater director in Britain, the United States and India. He began acting in the early 1960s and, after training in London in 1965, entered feature films in Juggernaut (1974), but was offered only limited ethnic roles, so he left acting and spent years as a journalist in India. Richard Attenborough brought him back to play Jawaharlal Nehru in Gandhi (1982), earning him a BAFTA nomination for supporting actor. Big films followed: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), David Lean's A Passage to India (1984), My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), Mississippi Masala (1991) and Street Fighter (1994). He won the Genie Award for Best Actor for Such a Long Journey, played Nehru again in the series Bharat Ek Khoj, and later appeared in Monsoon Wedding (2001), Proof, Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Dumbo (2019).

A change of course
Discouraged, Seth gave up acting and went back to India in 1977, working there as a journalist and editor of a quarterly journal in Delhi. He took leave from that job when Richard Attenborough asked him to play Jawaharlal Nehru in Gandhi.
First role
Seth made his first stage appearance in Peter Brook's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, a show that went on tour in 1972.
Early training
Seth trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 1965, after honing his theatrical skills at the Shakespeare Society of St Stephen's College.
Big break
In 1982 David Hare asked Seth, whom he had met in Delhi, to take the part of the author Victor Mehta in Hare's play A Map of the World. Seth gave up his editing job and went back to acting, and the play toured Australia, London and New York for several years.
Big break
Richard Attenborough cast Seth as Jawaharlal Nehru in Gandhi (1982), a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Seth went on to portray Nehru again in Bharat Ek Khoj, a 53-episode Doordarshan series from 1988.
