Leon Askin

Biography

Leon Askin was an Austrian actor who worked on both sides of the Atlantic and was best known for playing General Albert Burkhalter on the sitcom Hogan's Heroes. Born in Vienna in 1907, he trained with Louise Dumont and Max Reinhardt and made his professional debut in 1926 in The Dutch Merchant in Vienna. After settling in the United States, he built a Hollywood career often as foreign characters with pronounced accents. His films included The Robe (1953) and Billy Wilder's political satire One, Two, Three (1961). He played the stern General Burkhalter in 67 episodes of Hogan's Heroes from 1965 to 1971. He also made guest appearances on many television series and appeared on Broadway in A Temporary Island (1948) and Twentieth Century (1950). In 1994 he returned to Vienna, where he worked in cabaret and opera and at the Festwochen festival. His honors included the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art. He died in 2005.

A role that slipped away
Askin was given a role in Mel Brooks' 1974 movie Young Frankenstein, but in the end the scenes he had filmed were removed from the version that was released.
