Plot summary
In a Hong Kong bar, a woman who has little time left and a fugitive from a hanging share a Paradise cocktail, breaking their glasses and leaving the stems crossed. Outside, Sergeant Steve Burke arrests the man, Dan Hardesty, and takes him aboard a liner to San Francisco. Dan jumps into the water with the sergeant, frees himself, then sees Joan at the rail and pulls the floundering man out rather than swim off. He talks Steve into removing the handcuffs. Over the month-long crossing, Dan and Joan fall in love, each unaware of the other's secret. Two of Dan's friends are aboard, the pickpocket Skippy and a con artist posing as Countess Barilhaus, who keeps Steve occupied.

- To film the ocean-liner voyage, Warner Bros. chartered the real steamship Calawaii with a skeleton crew for six days of intensive shooting in May 1932, filming her at dock and at sea off the coast of Los Angeles.
- For the 1939 Lux Radio Theatre adaptation, original stars William Powell and Kay Francis reprised their roles, though Kay Francis filled in for Norma Shearer, who bowed out due to illness.
