Plot summary
After Tweedledee, a midget performer, strikes a heckler and starts a brawl, he and two other sideshow acts leave the carnival behind. Tweedledee, the ventriloquist Professor Echo and the strongman Hercules settle on a plan to grow wealthy through theft. Echo takes the part of Mrs. O'Grady, an old woman who keeps a bird shop, with Tweedledee posing as her grandchild and Hercules working behind the counter beside the unsuspecting Hector McDonald. Echo's girlfriend, the pickpocket Rosie O'Grady, claims to be his granddaughter. What the trio learns while delivering pets to wealthy customers serves them in a series of burglaries.

- The ape that Echo walks to the truck was a three-foot-tall chimpanzee made to appear gigantic through camera trickery and perspective shots; for these brief shots, Harry Earles, who played Tweedledee, doubled for Lon Chaney with his back to the camera, then the film cuts to Chaney.
- Lon Chaney and Harry Earles repeated their roles as Professor Echo and Tweedledee in the 1930 remake, which was the only film to feature Chaney's voice; he died shortly after filming it.
- With The Unholy Three, Tod Browning, Irving Thalberg and Lon Chaney began a collaboration that produced seven more films at M-G-M and marked the zenith of Browning's and Chaney's careers.
