Plot summary
Bushrod Gentry is a Kentucky trapper who roams the territory in 1798, staying a night or two with settler families before moving on. The unmarried daughters of his hosts fall for him, and he leaves in a hurry after reciting his reasons for staying single. Tribesmen wound him while he travels alone, and Mary Stuart Cherne, a young Scottish woman, saves him and takes him to her family, where his broken arm heals. Mary falls for him and asks him to marry her. Bushrod gives the same speech he always gives.
