Plot summary
Spike Madden ships out as a schooner's mate, crossing the world with an address book full of sweethearts. Wherever he goes, another man has been before him, and each girl has been given a small heart-shaped charm. In Central America a sailor named Salami irritates him, and a brawl with the police lands both men in jail. There Spike spots a heart-shaped ring on Salami's hand. Released, the two look for a private place to settle their quarrel, fall into the water, and Salami hauls Spike out; from then on they are inseparable and ship out together. Before Marseille, Spike tells Salami he has saved enough money for a house, horses, cattle, and chickens. At a carnival, a high diver called Mam'selle Godiva catches his eye, and he asks whether she would settle down with him.

- During the film's run at the Fox Theater in Washington, DC, 50 Coast Guard officers were recruited to appear at every performance for the inauguration of "Semper Paratus", the service's newly written official song.
- Todd McCarthy's book on Howard Hawks reports that A Girl in Every Port was the first Hawks film to introduce his signature themes and characters, and his first "love story between two men".
