Tzi Ma
Biography
Tzi Ma is a Hong Kong actor who started out in experimental theater in 1973 and went on to work across stage, television and film. Raised in New York, he made his first stage appearance in 1975 as the Monkey King and his film debut as Jimmy Lee in Cocaine Cowboys (1979). He has played Consul Han in the Rush Hour series, General Shang in Arrival (2016) and Hua Zhou in Mulan (2020). Among his other films are Dante's Peak (1997), The Quiet American (2002), The Ladykillers (2004), Red Doors (2005), The Farewell (2019) and Tigertail (2020). On television he had a recurring role as Cheng Zhi on 24 and starred in The CW's Kung Fu from 2021 to 2023. He received a Cine Golden Eagle Award for The Dance and The Railroad and a Garland Award for Flower Drum Song.

Own stunts
Before he did any film work, Tzi Ma had trained in martial arts. He put that training to use in his first movie, playing Jimmy Lee in Cocaine Cowboys in 1979.
Early training
Tzi Ma began professional acting in 1973 through experimental theater while in a residency at Nassau Community College, where he studied acting and taught movement.
A change of course
Tzi Ma found work at South Coast Repertory in Orange County during the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike, playing various characters in In Perpetuity Throughout the Universe. When the strike ended, the play closed that weekend, and he had a role on L.A. Law by the next week.
Behind the camera
Tzi Ma was the assistant director on a 1994 Berkeley Repertory Theatre stage production of Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior.
A change of course
Tzi Ma has said that watching Mako act in Pacific Overtures in 1976 was a major influence on his own acting career.
