Plot summary
Mrs. Marva Munson is an elderly widow with a room to rent and a strict religious household in Saucier. Her lodger is Professor Goldthwaite Higginson Dorr, a classics scholar who gets her permission to hold his group's practices in her root cellar. The musicians are in fact a gang of thieves, among them Gawain MacSam, a casino janitor, Garth Pancake, who works with explosives, the General, a tunneling expert, and Lump, the muscle. Their plan is to dig through the cellar wall into the vault beneath a nearby riverboat casino. They haul the dirt out at night and throw it from a bridge onto a garbage barge. Their scheme meets troubles: Gawain loses his casino job, and a plastic explosive goes off in Garth's hand.

- This was the first Coen brothers film in which Joel and Ethan shared both the directing and producing credit; on every earlier film Joel alone was credited as director and Ethan alone as producer.
- The remake was originally set to be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the Coens' former cinematographer, with Joel and Ethan hired only to write the screenplay; when Sonnenfeld dropped out as director in 2002, the Coens stepped in to direct and Sonnenfeld became a producer instead.
