Plot summary
Antonio Serrano, who distributes drugs for the mafia, visits his longtime associate Kinman Tau, a drug kingpin, in Thailand and asks that they work together. Tau turns him down. In Los Angeles, Jake Lo is an art student who turned away from politics after his father died at Tiananmen Square. A party of Chinese pro-democracy activists draws him in, and there he watches Serrano kill the party's sponsor, Carl Chang, an associate of Tau. When Serrano's men move against Jake, he disarms them with martial arts. Federal agents take him into protective custody and press him to travel to Chicago and testify against Serrano.

- According to some outlets, the Simon Says script that became Die Hard with a Vengeance was considered as a sequel to Rapid Fire, with Angela Bassett projected to co-star as an African-American community activist. When the project was retooled as a Die Hard film, her character was rewritten as male and given to Samuel L. Jackson.
- Brandon Lee broke a toe during the shoot of Rapid Fire, which swelled his foot and limited his mobility for a time. Some action scenes were reordered while he healed.
- Fox's publicity campaign for the film billed Brandon Lee as "the Action Hero of the 90s", a motto the actor found overly emphatic. He considered Rapid Fire his first legitimate starring role.
