Plot summary
In the 1870s, Peony leaves Guangdong for America to escape an arranged marriage, traveling with her friend Lily on labor contracts they believe will buy them a better life. In California they learn what the contracts mean: work as flower girls for Yu Hing, a Hong Kong Triad boss extending his reach overseas. Peony, trained in martial arts, refuses him, and her defiance catches the eye of Tom, an American-born cook whose father, Mr. Wong, worked on the First Transcontinental Railroad. She wears a round green jade pendant her grandmother gave her for luck and protection. In Los Angeles' Chinatown, the Irish American police, rival Chinese tongs and a white populace resentful of Chinese newcomers all share the same streets.
