Plot summary
Mexican bandits have taken Jackson's wife, Alexsandra, and his home and barn are burning when he wakes. He shoots one of them before he is overcome by smoke trying to dig something up in the barn. Neighbors wake him the next morning, and he retrieves the package and tells them he is heading south after the bandits. On the trail he comes upon the man he shot, who is dying and tells him nothing. Jackson takes two silver pieces from him and continues. A Native American fires two arrows at him; flanking the position, Jackson finds a cowering boy and runs him off. A Chinese man repairing a wagon levels a shotgun and asks five silver pieces as a toll, and a stranger named Ezra appears behind him and shoots him.
