Plot summary
In Imperial China, Hua Mulan is adventurous, which her parents Zhou and Li see as a problem, since they want her wed to a good husband. Her visit to the Matchmaker ends badly. In the north, Rouran warriors under Böri Khan overrun an imperial outpost with the help of Xianniang, a witch who shifts her shape. The Emperor answers with a decree: every family must send one man. When soldiers come to her village, Mulan's father, a war veteran with a crippled leg, pledges himself. Mulan takes his armor, his horse and his sword, rides to the camp of Commander Tung, an old comrade of her father, and trains among raw recruits as Hua Jun, a young man.

- Mulan was criticized for filming in Xinjiang, where human rights abuses are taking place; its end credits thank government entities there, including the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau in Turpan, which the U.S. added to its Entity List in October 2019.
- A boycott call against the film began after its star, Liu Yifei, reshared a People's Daily image quoting Global Times reporter Fu Guohao, who was assaulted during the 2019-2020 Hong Kong protests; she was accused of supporting police brutality in Hong Kong.
- Gong Li said the sets' "massive and ... unprecedented scale" pushed the budget to $290-300 million, though it was later reported as $200 million, making Mulan the most expensive film ever directed by a woman.
- Producer Jason T. Reed said Captain Li Shang, Mulan's love interest in the animated film, was dropped from the remake because having a commanding officer double as a love interest "was very uncomfortable".
