Plot summary
In 1873 the gambler Stubby Preston rides into the town of Salt Flats, Utah, intending to work its casino, and the sheriff jails him the moment he steps off the stagecoach. That night locals stage a vigilante raid on the casino, and only four prisoners survive: Stubby; Bunny, who is pregnant and works as a prostitute; Bud, a gentle man whose mind is disturbed; and Clem, a drunk. In the morning the sheriff sends them out of town with a wagon and horses, taken in exchange for Stubby's thousand-dollar stake, and the four set off together for Sun City, two hundred miles to the south. On the road a party of Quaker immigrants takes Bunny for Stubby's wife, and the pair play along. A gunman named Chaco then invites himself into their company, and Stubby is suspicious of him.
